"The only native land mammal when humans arrived was the Arctic Fox,[51] which came to the island at the end of the ice age, walking over the frozen sea."
&
"The animals of Iceland include the Icelandic sheep, cattle, chicken, goat, the sturdy Icelandic horse, and the Icelandic Sheepdog." SOURCE
One very fortunate thing is that Icelandic Sheep are still raised today both in Iceland, Canada and in the USA, as well as other countries for their fleece and meat.
I've bought some gorgeous Icelandic Lamb Fleece for spinning and several Nålebinding projects. The Icelandic Sheep are direct descendants of the animals brought to Iceland by the Vikings!
The other really fantastic thing about the fleece is that it's dual coated! So you can actually make 3 distinct types of yarn from their coats.
See my Wool Yarn page for more information on the parts and uses of their wool.
