I will be posting my research, links and progress here for my embroidery projects.

Once I finish my Autumn/Winter Overdress I would like to embroider on my VAD panel, my two VADs and my first wool shawl. I have very little experience with embroidery and just know a couple of hand stitches. (see, 'Stitches and Seems')

I recently bought my first 10-inch embroidery hoop, quite a few DMC floss colors and some needles. I look forward to learning some basic embroidery and adding some color and texture to my clothing.

Please see, 'Stitches and Seems' for other stitches, examples and links.

The 2 Main SCA Period Stitches for Embroidery

- Split Stitch ***
Great solid lines, but also a thin and delicate looking outline; used for filling in areas, you can do ALL of your embroidery with this single stitch.

- Chain Stitch ***
Great for thickly outlining designs.

Also depending on time period/region:

- Stem Stitch
- Satin Stitch (to fill in areas, will need to sew an outline)
- Couching
- Bayeau Stitch

also

- Blanket Stitch *
(As a Decorative Edging for Appliqué, used to prevent fraying / unraveling, and add visual interets)
